Managing Worry In Stressful Times

I know that these are stressful times. Even if you aren’t someone that worries a lot knowing that we are all needing to stay in and keep distance from others, it’s in the back of your mind (I know it is mine) that there is a virus out there that could be harmful to you and your loved ones.

So how are you managing your worry?

It’s been interesting to work with all the different clients (via telehealth) during this time because I am seeing the different ways people are managing their worry. Including watching myself and how I manage it.

Some people are going to extremes with the precautions. They haven’t left the house, they are having their food delivered and then washing it all down before putting it away. Some people are just making sure they wash their hands and showering upon returning from going out. And of course per the order most are wearing a face mask now if they do go in public areas. I know I’m somewhere in between. I try to not go out much except my morning walk in which I’m touching nothing and talking to no one. But if I do have to go out I do take my hand sanitizer and use it anytime I go in or out of my car and when I get home I am washing my hands immediately and showering.

Well I’m guessing at least we are all having good hygiene these days. LOL 🙂

Here’s what I want you to know: when you do start to worry and ruminate too much on the what ifs your job is to challenge those crazy negative thoughts. Ask yourself questions like “Is this thought 100% accurate?” or “Is this a helpful thought for me?”

I know I’m not paying too much attention to the news because it’s a little bit too much but to help me to challenge any of my worry thoughts I am paying attention to numbers but in a helpful way. I live in Los Angeles area and I know the numbers are high here in comparison to other places. But what I do is look at the covid # which as of today is around 25,000 and compare it to the population which is 12,000,000. This reminds me that the chances of contact are smaller than all the hype. However, I do still take all the precautions to keep me safe. And that is the other way I challenge my thoughts is to remind myself of how the virus is contracted and that I am not doing things that would put me at risk.

So come up with your ways to challenge your worry thoughts.

To your Happiness and Health,
